      <image:title>What is Play Therapy? - Next steps</image:title>
<image:caption>If you feel that therapy would work for a child or young person you know the first step is for you to contact Jigsaw to start the process. Our aim is to make this as simple as possible. An initial contact (referral) can be made to Jigsaw and we will then put you in touch with the most suitable and available therapist who will then support you each step of the way.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Jigsaw - Julie Burton, Jigsaw Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>Setting up Jigsaw Play Therapy Ltd. over 7 years ago has enabled me to work towards my vision that children and their families and also schools and other professionals should have access to effective and bespoke therapy services. I have always believed that the one size fits all approach does not work and at the heart of our ethos at Jigsaw is that no child or family is a square peg to be pushed into a round hole. Playing a key role in advocating and supporting the wider systems around a child through therapy, parental support and workshops is at the centre of what we do. We also offer clinical supervision, training and consultancy of professionals which helps support this vision. I have been a Play Therapist, Trainer and Clinical Supervisor since 2007 and feel very lucky to do the work I do. Developing the team at Jigsaw was a natural next step for me and it is great to work closely with so many brilliant therapists. I love gardening and enjoy experiencing new things when travelling.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Jigsaw - Jigsaw’s Equality and Diversity Vision</image:title>
<image:caption>At Jigsaw we have made a strong commitment to our vision for equality, diversity and inclusion. We hope to support the development and establishment of processes to help achieve change. Through our interaction with families, professionals and as colleagues we will work hard to embed these responsibilities into our everyday life and working practices. This will enable us to embrace the diversity of all our clients and those that support them more effectively.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Families - How can therapy help?</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the hardest jobs we will ever do is to be a parent. Our ability to feel effective in this role is often impacted by the things that life throws at us. Having an understanding of why a child or young person might behave the way they do, gaining increased knowledge of child development, the impact of trauma and the neuroscience that explains some of the behaviours will help you as a parent to gain confidence in your parenting. A key part of the work may be to understand your own triggers when managing the more challenging behaviours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Families - Make sessions work for you and your family</image:title>
<image:caption>Each therapist at Jigsaw is open to include sessions with you as the parent or carer to support your understanding of your child.. These sessions can take on the form of individual coaching sessions which can be arranged as required. We might suggest this support in conjunction with your child being in therapy or they can be arranged as a separate intervention or programme. Filial Play Coaching may also be a beneficial intervention to consider and would involve you working closely with your child on your relationship and attachment. It might be that you feel your own therapy or counselling would be beneficial and we are happy to support you through this process too. Indicate what you would like to discuss on the enquiry form, and we will guide you through the next steps.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Who we support - Families - Parent/ Carer Counselling and Psychotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>To ensure that we are not working with the child or young person in isolation we have developed a Counselling and Psychotherapy programme which parents and carers can access either independently of their childs therapy or to run alongside. We have found this to be a highly effective way to support families and this can enhance the progress made by the child or young person in therapy too. We have therapists and counsellors on our team who can discuss this process with you. The sessions can be offered face to face in one of our designated spaces or via Zoom.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Who we support - Families - Video Interaction Guidance</image:title>
<image:caption>We have therapists on our team who could offer Video Interaction Guidance. This way of working involves interactions between a parent or carer and their child being video recorded during the session. The trained practitioner 'guider' would then spend time looking through the clips with the parent and offering feedback. The aim of this way of working is to enhance communication within relationships. The therapist. will help the parent to reflect on the video clips and use this feedback to grow more confident as a parent. These sessions can be facilitated. in the childs home or within a school or other setting.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Professionals - How we provide support</image:title>
<image:caption>We have found that integrating our service into schools is the most effective way of providing support. The way this will look would be individual for each school. Key to the work is a consistent and confidential space to offer the sessions in that would be the same each week. We can work out the logistics together. Our therapists can come into your school to deliver therapy to one child, but we can also discuss a package of work. This package can evolve to include drop-in sessions, staff and parent support, supervision and training packages to name but a few. We are happy to deliver training to all professionals on themes such as developmental trauma and attachment theory but we can develop a training package to meet your own needs and we’re happy to discuss this.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each of the training opportunities offered through the Jigsaw Academy are suitable for all professionals. <image:title>Who we support - Professionals - Professional Support and Supervision.</image:title>
<image:caption>The main aim and focus of the service is to offer a confidential space where participants feel able to offload and reflect upon their workload and, to be supported in considering how their own wider experiences might be affecting their responses and reactions and in turn their energy levels and ability to self-care. This service is available to all members of the school community including the Senior Leaders, Designated Safeguarding Leads, Teachers. and Support. Staff. It is also a valuable support service for Social Workers and Foster Carer’s who will also benefit from having somewhere to offload and explore responses and reactions in a non-judgmental space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Young people - What does a therapy session look like?</image:title>
<image:caption>The rooms and tools offered are adapted and presented in a way that is more appealing to the older child. Often the work is referred to as Creative Arts Therapy. Games can be a great opener for teenagers, and this often leads on to wider exploration of the room and the other areas offered. Whilst it is possible that young people may wish to talk there is no expectation that they will need to do this. Sometimes having a space to be creative is just what is needed to work things through. On the team we have therapists who can offer creative therapies including play and drama but as part of the assessment it might be felt that a talking therapy or counselling approach would be more beneficial. We have therapists on the team who can offer these sessions too. We can arrange for the sessions to be face to face in one of our designated rooms or in the young persons school if a space can be provided. We also have therapists trained to facilitate Zoom sessions if required.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Young people - How do I look into starting therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>Jigsaw accepts referrals from schools, local authority teams, fostering and adoption agencies GP's and other health professionals. We are also happy to talk through the process with parents or individuals who wish to refer directly into the service. In the initial stages we will arrange a brief telephone conversation to discuss what is required and from there we can move forwards to a formal referral as appropriate. You can use the contact Jigsaw Play Therapy Form to make this process of initial contact easier. There is a simple process involved once agreed which Therapy is the right intervention. An interview with the Parent / Carer will take place to gather information but the main aim at this stage is to build a positive working relationship to ensure the therapy is as effective as possible. Meetings with teachers and other professionals involved in the young persons world would also be arranged as appropriate. We use the Goodman's Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as part of our assessment and welcome these to be completed by referrers and parents. When we meet the young person, they would be able to complete an SDQ too. Once the permission form has been competed by all those with parental responsibility for the young person the work can then begin. The final decision to attend is the young persons and we respect their autonomy. We are happy for the sessions to be carried out in different settings and will work out where would be the most suitable for each young person. This could be in one of designated therapy rooms or perhaps in their own school. The SDQ will give us a guide to how many sessions will be needed in the first instance. This is likely to be a minimum of 15 and can be extended further when required. You will be told how many sessions would be advised as part of the referral process. Talking Therapies Sometimes engaging in Play or Creative Arts Therapy can be a little daunting for older children and adolescents so we have people on the team who can offer both counselling and also psychotherapy. They have experience in offering sessions in secondary schools, youth centres and in private practice. The sessions can also be offered via Zoom. The sessions offer a non-judgmental space for discussion and exploration of the underlying reasons for referral. The sessions will be held at the same time each week. The ending is. as important as the beginning and we will always wish to work towards a planned ending.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Children - What does a therapy session look like?</image:title>
<image:caption>All Jigsaw Play Therapists are trained to work creatively with the children. The theoretical model is Integrative Holistic which means the child is offered a varied tool-kit to use. This works on the premise that children use play as their language. There is no expectation that they will talk but the therapist will aim to be led by the child. This is referred to as non-directive play therapy but the therapists can work in a more directive way if needed. Review meetings and also, progress reports are an important part of the service and they also help everyone to know how things are progressing so they can be part of the process in discussing next steps. It is important that the voice of the child is included at each stage so that they feel heard and empowered.</image:caption>

<image:title>Who we support - Children - What is the tool kit?</image:title>
<image:caption>The tool kit is a carefully selected range of toys and creative art materials that enable a child to work at their own pace and lead their therapy. Sand Play supports the child to explore and tell their story Puppets support a child to explore relationships and their attachments Music is a great way to communicate without the need for words, aiding connections Therapeutic Stories help a child to connect metaphorically to their inner resources Creative Visualisations promote relaxation and mindfulness Clay aids creativity and supports their ability to express how they are feeling Art through drawing and painting provides a creative outlet Movement enables self-expression and can be a great release</image:caption>

In the busy world we live in we sometimes find it hard to fit everything in. With the support from your coach parents are guided each step of the way. Techniques, and playful ideas to engage are shared. If you are interested in Filial Play support, please indicate this on the enquiry form and we’ll guide you through each step.
